We may be speaking at the same time at WISHRM 22, but I couldn’t miss an opportunity to shine the speaker spotlight on Tom Daniels.  Tom is also my ride from the Madison airport, so it is the least I could do to highlight another of the #HRAwesome sessions in store for attendees this year at #WISHRM22.  For those of you that don’t know Tom as well as I do – here is your opportunity to meet and learn more about one of the best connectors in our #HRCommunity.

Tom, please tell us a little bit about you and your role at Bowling Green State University (BGSU).  How did your prior HR/OD experience lead you to your current position?

After a 20 year career in the advertising and marketing research industry, mostly in operations and leading organization development, I moved into a role working in higher education. It’s a career move that most of my friends and former colleagues knew was the right place for me. As the associate director for graduate and executive programs in business at Bowling Green State University, my role focuses primarily on admissions and advising students studying in our executive master of organization development program and our fairly new doctorate in organization development and change program. Both programs allow me to work with working professionals who are looking to grow both professionally as well as personally.

What inspired you to create the Change House and how has this method helped you and the organizations you have supported navigate change?

The Change House was actually developed by a few consultants from Sweden and I found it a great way to look at assessing an organization for change. In many cases organizations find themselves in a crossroads as they don’t listen to the things they say or recognize how they behave so they are typically surprised when they find themselves in a tough position. I use the their language and behavior to assess where they are at today and then help identify specific actions they can take to help move their organization from one room to the next. The great thing about the change house is that it can also be used for a specific department or even an individual.

What are you mist looking forward to a speaker at WISHRM?

The people. It’s really that simple. I’m also looking for an engaging sessions and to learn from so many others. 

I hear a rumor you are a die hard Green Bay Packers fan, what are your season predictions? 

GO PACK GO! Let’s go with 12-4 and to make at least the NFC Championship game…with a chance to make the Super Bowl!
